How does jBounceBack work
jBounceBack is a component which enables you to handle bounce messages. The system will connect to your mailbox and analyse the messages to clean up your list of subscribers properly.
What is a bounce message?
A bounce message, or Delivery Status Notification (DSN) message is an automated electronic mail message sent from a mail system to inform the sender that his message could not be delivered.
So when you send an e-mail message but your message can not be delivered, you will receive a bounce message which indicates you that your message could not be delivered. (You can try on your own mailbox to send a message to a non existing e-mail address and see what message do you get!)
Here is an example of bounce message :
This message indicates that the message could not be delivered to "
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
".
How does jBounceBack use bounce messages?
jBounceBack is able to connect to your mailbox to handle the message. It will read all messages and based on some rules (that you can customize), it will try to determinate if the message is a bounce message or not. If the message is identified as a bounce message, jBounceBack will analyze the content of the message to find the e-mail address that the bounce message refers to. If jBounceBack find it, the system will increment the number of bounce for that user's address and proceed the widgets (the Acajoom Widget). When the number of consecutive counts for a given e-mail address reaches the configured threshold and the minimum delay between the first bounce of this e-mail address and the latest one is respected, the Acajoom widget will either delete, unsubscribe, unconfirm, black list or subscribe the user to an other list, based on your preferences.
What happen with normal messages?
jBounceBack will also receive other automatic replies which are not real bounces (it does not indicate that the message could not be delivered). For example, some of your receivers may set up an automatic reply which is "Thank you for your e-mail..." and this reply will be handled by the system. First, jBounceBack won't identify this e-mail as a real bounce message and so the system won't unsubscribe the user or take any action. Then, you can set up the system so that messages which are not identified as bounces will be either redirected to an other e-mail address (and so you will be able to handle it like if it arrived in your own mailbox) or saved into the database (or both!). You will find those options if you edit your Mailbox Connection via the menu "Mailboxes".
