Even though it has been around for over 50 years, the popular Czech cosmetic brand Dermacol isn’t yet a household name. And it definitely should be! After their initial success in the early 1960’s, the company formed a few important partnerships with dermatologists and experts in beauty and film to craft a superior makeup line. Dermacol foundation is an amazing makeup foundation that offers superior cover and will help you camouflage acne, freckles, moles and even tattoos. In fact, this cover up makeup helped me so much with my vitiligo.
Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. It happens when the cells that produce melanin stop functioning or die off. I didn’t experience vitiligo until my early 30s and the onset was gradual. It started off in my hands and neck and then spread to several large patches on my face and back. It left me feeling so self-conscious and really sad, especially when I wanted to dress up to go out or for special occasions.
I started looking into cover up makeup to help dissimulate the look of my vitiligo and tried many products on the market. Here, I will share a little info on the ones I used and tell you about the good, the bad, and the really amazing.
Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation – Price $35 USD
This is Kat Von D’s best-selling foundation collection. It comes in a lot of different shades, which as awesome. This is makeup to cover tattoos and it’s specifically branded as such. This makeup really, really covers well. However, it’s a little too matte and cakey and dries out my skin a lot. Also, the formula oxidized and turned orange rather quickly in the bottle.
Dermablend Professional Cover Crème – Price $39 USD
Dermablend is a formula that has been around for some time, but it seems their formula has changed. I remember using it a long time ago with really good results for some acne coverage. This time, however it was sub-par! It felt like really thick, grease paint that hardly had any coverage. It definitely did not cover my vitiligo and did not stay put for more than a couple hours. It transfers onto anything that touches your face or hands too!
Make Up For Ever Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream – Price $34 USD
This has good full coverage that doesn’t alter the shade to be too light or too cakey. This concealer lasts long hours through the day, doesn’t rub off easily and is waterproof. I had to use two layers to provide adequate coverage, but didn’t have any problems with it ‘melting’ off my face.
Dermacol Make-Up Cover Foundation – Price $14 – $20 USD
Dermacol Makeup Cover is a full coverage foundation. It is a waterproof foundation makeup and it provides really intense coverage, but still lets you have a natural finish to the skin. The formula is made up of 50 % pigment and is very opaque, which is how it offers so much coverage. The Dermacol foundation is great for completely neutralizing dark under eye circles and thoroughly camouflaging the vitiligo on my face neck and even my hands. The only downfall of the Dermacol Makeup Cover is that it doesn’t offer a ton of shades, but I was able to find one that suited me nicely.
Tips and Tricks For Great Coverage
In order to properly use make up to cover tattoos, acne, discolorations, and under eyes you need to use proper technique. The best makeup in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t know how to apply it! So, here are a few tips.
- Star off with freshly cleansed skin
- Moisturize, especially if you are covering something on your face in order to provide smoother coverage.
- Use a high-quality primer to help the foundation stay in place.
- Use a good brush or sponge in order to apply
- If you have an issue where you have a lot of discoloration or hyperpigmentation (like my vitiligo) use an orange or green concealer under the makeup in order to help even the skin tone out.
- Apply in light layers and wait a few seconds between layers
- Blend, blend, blend!
- Set with translucent powder.
And now you’re ready to go! But remember to completely cleanse your face and body of any makeup at the end of the day.
I am really, really glad that I found such great makeup choices to help me cover up my vitiligo. Dermacol foundation is my favorite product on the market, because of its high quality and amazing price! It works better than a lot of pricier options out there and it’s amazing how it stays put, covers so much, and still looks natural.
I am also thankful for learning how to properly use make up to cover up my vitiligo. I have regained my confidence and no longer feel depressed when I am getting ready, especially for special occasions, because I can still look pretty and not look like I am caking on a bunch of make up in order to hide something.
